Bowles Farming Company was founded in 1965 by brothers George and Henry Bowles, and their sister, Amy Bowles Lawrence. Amy Bowles Lawrence died in 1967 leaving four children, and Henry Bowles died in 1981, leaving three children. George Bowles died in 2005, leaving no children. The company is now owned by members of the Bowles and Lawrence families, and Constance Crowley Peabody (widow of Henry Bowles). Some of the land we farm is leased from family members, some from third parties, and some is owned outright by the company. Philip Bowles (son of Henry) is President and Chairman. The three founding stockholders' great-grandfather, Henry Miller, founded Bowles Farming's predecessor, Miller & Lux, Inc., in 1858. So far, six generations of family members have worked in the business The Company's headquarters are on the ranch at 11609 South Hereford Road, Los Banos. We also have a small office in San Francisco.

Our primary crops are cotton, alfalfa, processing tomatoes, and grain. These crops are sold both locally and all over the world. Because we have to compete with growers worldwide, our strategy is to grow these crops for the very highest quality, at the lowest possible cost. The reason we operate the farming company is because we believe we can generate a better return for the owners, and enhance the value of the land we own or hold under long term lease, better than if we were to lease the property to others.
